DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP AUSTRALIANS IN FINAL New York, August 25. Tho Australian tennis players, Patterson and O'Hara Wood, arc in the finals of the National Doubles Championship, having defeated Niles (j’.meiiica) and Borotra (I*rance) in •tlie semi-final, 6 —l, 7 — 5, 6 —o. The Australians won the first, second, and third games, and Niles aJid Borotra tlie fourth. Ihe Australians took the fifth, sixth, and seventh. They were playing blushed tennis, taking game after game with ease. Niles and Borotra won the first game hi the second set aftei deuce, and the Australians won the second with the loss of one stroke, and tho third to love. Niles and Borotra were very unsteady, and Patterson’s speed was terrific. Niles and Borotra won tho fourth and fifth, each with the loss of one point, and the Australians won the sixth in like n anner. Niles and Borotra won the seventh after three deuces, and the Australians won the eighth. Niles find Borotra steadied considerably, and wore playing better tennis when the lain interrupted the ninth game. The lain soon stopped, und the Australians won the ninth game to love, the tenth with the loss of a stroke, the eleventh with the loss of two, and the twelfth In love.
In the third set tho Australians won the first and second games after a double douco, the third to love, ihe fourth with tho loss of a point, and the fifth after deuce. Niles and Borotra, who yesterday defeated Williams and Washburn, last year’s Davis Cup doubles team, in a sensational match, appeared weak to-day against Patterson’s speed. Tho Australians won tho sixth game after deuce had been called, and tho set and match. The Wallace-Johnsoln and W. M. Johnston match against Tilden and Richards; which was scheduled to be played simultaneously with the above match, was postponed until afterwards. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
Tho result of -the last-mentioned match has not been cabled, but apparently it was won by Tilden and Richards, for as tho message received yesterday afternoon stated—The Tilden and Richards match against Patterson and O’Hara Wood for the Doubles Championship has been postponed, owing to rain, until Monday.
