A Press Association message from Invercargill announces the death of Mr. John Stead, ex-Mayor and member of the Education Board, and a prominent figure in public fife generally. . lie arrived in 1864, and had resided at Invercargill ever since. He relinquished the Mayoralty last year, after throe terms of office, and previously was a borough councillor for many years.

There was a large attendance at the funeral of th© late Dr. T. Harrison Horrax, which took place on Saturday afternoon. The funeral was . a motor one, and the interment took place in St. Mary’s Churchyard at Karori. Among those present was a large representation of tho members of the Wellesley Club and tho Wellington Golf Club, members of which (his personal friends) acted ns pallbearers, tile Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, for wbicn tod' Dr. Horrax acted as honorary surgeon (to tho Children’s Hospital}, was represented by 'the superintendent of tlio hospital (Dr. Macdonald Wilson;, Dr. W. E. Herbert, Messrs. F. Castle (chairman of the board), C. M. Luke, G. Petherick, F. W. Butler, and Rev. Dr. J. K. Elliott, whilst among those of his profession were noticed Drs. Young, Gibbs, Gilmer, Palmer, Hardwick Smith, Corkill, and Mackin. The dental profession was represented bv Messrs. G. Tripe and 0. V. Ellis. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rov. 11. Watson, of St. Peter’s, in association wit‘,> the Rev. G. Y. Woodward, of St. Mary’s, Karori.

A Press Association message from Christchurch records the death yesterday morning of Mrs. O’Rorke, widow of the late Mr. E. Dennis O’Rorke, and sister of Sir Heaton Rhodes. Mr. William Andrew Woods, aged 50, proprietor of the Central Hotel, Auckland, died on Wednesday. Mr. Woods was a native of Dunedin, being a son of Mr. C. W. Woods, a wellknown Dunedin builder, and he had been at the Central Hotel for about four years. Prior to going to Auckland, Mr. Woods was in charge of the Grand Hotel, Rotorua, for twelve months, after having been proprietor of the City Hotel, Dunedin, for seven years. Death was due to a paralytic stroke. Mr. Woods is survived by Mrs. Woods and one son, Mr. C. Woods, solicitor, of Auckland.

Members of the various news room staffs of tho Christchurch “Press” gathered round the stone on Friday night for the purpose of farewelling Mr. R. AV. Campbell, deputy-printer, who has been appointed printer of the “Evening Post,” Wellington. In handing to Mr. Campbell a clock, Mr. F. J. Board, the printer, testified to the esteem in which he was held. Mr. A. M. Burns, sub-editor of the “Press,” on behalf of the sub-editorial and reporting staffs, added his tribute to Mr. Campbell’s services, and expressed best wishes for his future welfare. Mr. J. M. McLean spoke on behalf of the stereotyping staff.. Mr. Campbell assumes his new duties in Wellington to-day.

Mr. E. C. Huie, managing editor of the Christchurch .“Sun,” is at present in Wellington, on route to Australia. Mr. B. Van Staveren, who has been on a visit to England and America, returned to Wellington by the Maunganui from San Francisco.

Mr. Frank Reed, who for the past sixteen years has occupied, the position of inspecting engineer for the Mines Department, subsequently receiving the additional appointments of consulting engineer for State collieries and chief inspector of coal mines, is about to retire on superannuation from the Public Service, although several years on the right side of the superannuation age. Mr. Reed proposes to commence practice in Wellington as a consulting engineer. Prior to entering the Public Service of New Zealand Mr. Reed held several important positions, including that of mining engineer and inspector of coal and gold mines to the Government of West Australia, general manager of the Peak Hill Goldfields, Ltd., W.A.. general manager to the Doric Gold Mines, Ltd., Colorado U.S.A., also as an engineer attached to the Public Works Department of West Australia, under the late C. Y. O’Connor, engineer-in-chief._ Mr. Reed is a member of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, a licensed surveyor of New Zealand, Tasmania, and West Australia, and also holds the British and New Zealand first-class certificates as a colliery manager. The funeral of the late 10/2311 Joseph Patrick Sharkey took place on Saturday morning. Requiem Mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. by the Rev. Father Fallon at St. Anne’s Church, Newtown, and the cortege then proceeded to Karori, where the body was buried in the Soldiers’ Cemeterv. He served the public faithfully for many! years as a Justice of the Peace, and , with the late Mr. John Cudby, J.P., frequently officiated at the local Police Court, lie was twice married. His first wife died over fifty years ago, and ; his second fourteen years ago. He is survived by the two daughters, of his first wife, who kept house for him and nursed him during the. last year. ‘
