THE HIGHER CRITICISM
Sir,—l read in your paper of to-day. 23rd instant, an article by the Rev W. Heathcote, “The Garden of Eden, as expounded and explained by higher criticism. Is it not presumption on tho part of the higher I critics to try and explain and alter the meaning oi God’s Word. Can they answer the question, How was civilisation brough about? Was it by . higher criticism or bv true Christianity and the InFpireH Word of God? If J>y the former, higher criticism, which is most modern, can they explain the old laws, which wo to-day use? Did some ancient think them out? for tliev are as old, nearly, as the Garden of Eden. Or can they explain how all nations when they forsook God and His laws, became what we call heatheu—savages, idol worshippers, etc., and later when the Word of God and Gospel ot Christ was preached to them, and accepted by them, what was the resultlight, knowledge, prosperity, and freedom. Our own nation, and all 1 ruteatant nations, are examples Higher criticism was not heard ot then. It is all those “isms” that are leading the nations away from the old truths for which our forefathers gave thdir lives. We must accept every word ot the Bible, from the Garden of Men to the last verse of Revelation or leave it alone.—l am, etc., r L.
