HARRIERS.

TO-DAY’S EVENTS: NZ. Cross-country Championship, Dunedin. Brooklyn, at Island Bay Olympia, at Brooklyn. Wellington, at Lyall Bay. Scottish, at Brooklyn.

The Now Zealand crosscountry championship, the premier event of the harrier season, is being run at Dunedin today. This. event is an annual one to decide the individual championship, and at the same time is an interprovincial teams’ championship. The N.Z.A.A.A. yirovides a gold medal for the individual champion, and also standard badges for each of the four members of the winning team; a team consisting of five men, of which the first four to finish count for points for the aggregate.

A. sealed l handicap y usually run in conjunction with the other issues. The event was instituted in 1903, but was discontinued between 1914 and 1919. II Moore, of the Olympic Club. Wellington, is the present individual champion, Wellington province holding the teams’ championship. For to-day’s race three centres have entered teams—Canterbury, Otago, and Wellington. Wellington will be represented by tho following;—R. Rose (Masterton Harriers), D. Todd, andl A. Barclay (Brooklyn Harriers), H. Moore (Olympic), and A. Page (Scottish Harriers). The personnel of the team has been reviewed in these notes previously, and there is little to add unless it be that competent judges consider the team to be the strongest which has represented Wellington for many a year. Although the Canterbury Centre, has been represented at previous championships., this is the first year in which a harrier club has functioned in the province a 1 new club having been formed at Christchurch this season. No Information is available as to the members qf their team, but it will be interesting to. see how they shape, in comparison with their showing in events prior to the formation of a true crosscountry club. The team to represent Otago, from which tho greatest opposition ie 'likely to come, will be substantially that shown by the planings in their provincial championships. Althouglh Lister' beat Frye in this event, there were only a few yards between them, eo taking a line through the performance of Frye last year, I look forward with confidence to Wellington retaining the honours. Incidentally, the man who beats Rose for individual honours will need to be a champion of champions, A special report of the race will appear in Monday’s issue. GENERAL ITEMS

TTie Wellington Club’s .championship held last Saturdav resulted in a win for A. Hose, who demonstrated that his showing in the provincial championshins ns compared with his club mates was no "fluke.” The Bennett Memorial road race will be on us shortly, and it behoves clubs to get busy and. select their teams, in order to give them an opportunity to train. Tt is to be . hoped that teams from sports clubs other than harriers will participate this year as well as fully representative teams from the har-, rier clubs, as the event is one worthy of ftrkmg isnpnort. A judicious canvassing of football and other winter clubs by members of the harrier subcommittee should: add to the entries, and would go far to giving the event the "all sports” character which was originally intended for it. The Olymp’c Club is moving earlv in the matter of selecting teams, as they hold a try-out for this purpose to-day. Next Saturday the Scottish . Club is holding a teams race for a shield presented by Mr. R. W. McVilly, president of the club.
