s Dunedin, August 9. All classes of sheep sold under keen competition at the Burnside sales today, and prices were fully 2s. per head in advance of last week’s rates. The yarding was not a very large one, and consisted principally of wethers. There was a good demand for ewes, which were in short supply. A small number' of lambs were offered, and it being the last lamb sale of the season there was very little demand. The bulk of the yarding was secured by graziers, and prices were lower to the extent of from 2.3. to ,3s. per head. There was a good yarding of fat cattle, and many pens contained animals of excellent quality The market was very firm, prieds being fully equal do, and in some instances higher than, those realised at last week’s sales. Pigs were also in short supply, but competition was not very brisk, and prices wore easier, both for baconers and porkers. There was a very small yarding of store cattle, and prices were a shade firmer.
Fat Cattle.—-A medium yarding, 192 head being offered. There was keen competition, and prices were firm at the commencement, but eased towards the close, finishing'at 10s. to 15s. per head lower than last week. Prime ox beef was worth 2oS? 6d. to 275. 6d. per 1001 b., medium quality ox 245. to 265., prime heifer beef 225. to 245., good cow beef 18s. to 205., inferior down to 16s. Extra prime heavyweight bullocks realised up to £l4 155., prime £ll 10s. to £l2 10s., medium £9 to £lO, light and unfinished sorts from £7 to £B. Prime heifers realised from £6 10s. to £7 10s., medium £5 to £5 10s./ light and' aged from £4 to £4 10s.
Sheep.—A medium yarding, numbering 1861 head. The yarding consisted mostly of wethers, a number of which were unfinished. Prices for prime sorts improved to the extent of Is. 6d. to 2s. per head, and unfinished sold at from par to a shilling advance. Prime heavy wethers sold at -rates equal to 4Jd. to 4Sd- per lb., a few odd linos reached 5d., ewes made 3d. to 3}d. Extra prime heavy-weight wethers realised up to 415., prime to 365.,. medium 20s. to 225., light and unfinished sorts from 17s. to 18s. Extra prime heavy-weight ewes realised up to 265. 6d., prime 21s. to 235., medium 15s. to 175., light and aged from 12s. to 14s. Lambs.—A small yarding, numbering 267 head, The quality was not of a very high standard. Butchers secured several pens, but the bulk of the yarding was taken by graziers. Prices were easier to the extent of ,2a. per head. Prime lamb made 6d. to 6Jd. per lb., medium quality 6d. Extra prime lambs realised up to 245. 9d., prime 18s. to 205., medium 16s. to 175., inferior Sorts from 13s. to 14s.
Dairy Cattle. —About fifty head were offered for sale. There was good competition, and satisfactory prices were realised. These ranged from £5 to-£9 10s. for best cows, and from £2 15s. to £3 10s. for two-year-old heifers. Store Cattle.—A small yarding was offered. With the exception of two pens of three year old' bullocks, the yarding was of an inferior description. Prices on the whole were slightly firmer. Three-year-old bullocks made from £4 17s. 6d. to £5 per head. ‘Pigs.—A medium yarding, for which competition was not very- brisk. Prices were easier both for baconers and porkers ito the extent of ss. and 7s. 6d. respectively. Best baconers realised from 51)d- to 6d. per lb., and best porkers from 7d. to Bd. per lb. JOHNSdNVILLE FAT STOCK SALE Messrs. Abraham and Williams. Ltd., and Wright, Stephenson and Co.. Ltd., report on their Johnsonville sale held yesterday. A ver.y good quality yarding of all classes of stock came forward, although there were one or two inferior pens of both sheep and cattle. Some extra heavy sheep sold reasonably, but heavy lambs sold well. Beef was inclined to be easier, although the quality was good. Medium calves sold well. Quotations : —Ox, best. £9 7s. 6d., £9 10s„ £lO 10s.. to £lO 155.; good, £8 10s. to £8 155.; medium, £7 10s. to £7 155.; unfinished, £5 to £6 7s. 6d.: cows, best, £4 10s. to £5; plain. £3; voalers. '3os., £2, £2 Is., to £2 6s. ; light, 20s. to 255.; wethers, heavy, 305., 315., to 325.; good, 275. 3d. to 275. 6d.; light, 21s. 9d.; ewes, medium, 21s. 9d.; light. 175., 18s., to 205.; lambs, 255. 9d., 265., 275., to 275. 3d.; small, 18s.
