ANZAC MEMORIAL

PROPOSAL TO CHANGE NAME OF TASMAN SEA TO COMMEMORATE SUPERB COMRADESHIP by TzLaaßAPH.—Panes A ssociation —Copyright, z Sydney, August 9. The “Daily Telegraph,” commenting on tho suggestion that the name of the Tasman Sea should be changed to “Anzac Sea,” says: “Of all the proposals to commemorate appropriately the name Anzac. this is incomparably tlie best. The Tasman Sea unites tho sister Commonwealths which together built up tlie fame which the word Anzac represents. We believe tlie Anzac tradition will bo immortal, and in order to assist to keep it constantly before us. no grander memorial could be imagined than to call this geographically Australasian sea by this inspiring name. It will be surprising if the suggestion does not commend itself to nil Australians and New Zealanders by its signal fitness. There need be no fear that we should be comemorating the war snirit, which-everybody hopes may yet ho banished from every sea. We should only be commemorating superb comradeship of a kind which tho world has alwavs admired, and will admire always.”—Press Assn. PROPOSAL SUPPORTED BY RETURNED Sydney, August 9 A deputation will wait on Mr. Hughes when he arrives in Sydney, requesting that the name “Anzac Sea” shall be substituted for “Tasman Sea.” Tho RetuTned Soldiers’ Congress passed a ro'lflution stating that the. glorv of Australia and New Zealand would bo imtjortalised by naming the waters washing both countries “Anzac Sea,” and that the co-onen-tion of New Zealand sold'ie.'s should be sought noth that object.—Press Assn. • AN INTERNATIONAL QUESTION Melbourne, August 9 Mr. AV. M. Hughes, referring to tho proposed change of name, asked: “What can wo do? The Tasman S*>a is an internation.il highway, along which travels tho commerce of all nations. It is ai. international question.' Tlie colonies cannot alter tho map at their will. —Press Assn.
