Daniel AValsh stated that he arrived by the Maori onjune 1 from the south, and after visiting several hotels in the course of the day, met Lane, whom he knew, at 5 p’.m. They were in the Dominion Hotel till 6 p.m. Lane had no money and witness agreed- to pay for his bed. They eventually got accommodation at Priestly’s Coffee Palace in Alanners Street . Later O’Brien came in and witness was told he paid for the three beds. AVhile in the lavatory durinp- the night, Lane and O’Brien got hold of him and punched him in the face, taking’£22 witness had in notes. „He told a policeman, who found Lane in a Chinaman’s yard. AVhile he was in the Chinaman’s yard Sergeant Dyer found a pound note. Police evidence was called and the Court adjourned until to-day.
