TRAMWAY DISPUTE
TO COME BEFORE COUNCIL TO-NIGHT AGREEMENT ENDS TO-DAY When consulted (last night as to whether there was any development in the tramway negotiations, the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright) said that there had been (no further • conferences with the union’s representatives since the negotiations broke down .on Tuesday. The position now is that tho award runs out to-day (June 29), and the existing agreement will continue in force until action (or no action) is taken by one or other of the parties concerned. . if the union considers it prudent to take action by striking (after a ballot) it may do so without offending any law. It stated that tho Wellington tramway men are well paid at preeent —better, it is understood, than anywhere else in Australasia—yet the demands served bin l the council are said to include advances tin wages, and some costly changes in the conditions of employment. The position will ho Oiscussed at to-night’s mooting of the City Council.
