WRESTLE WITH LEOPARD

An extraordinary story of a struggle between a man and a leopard comes from the Tanganyika Territory. Mr. J. Turnleyj, together with a Major Bradstock, at the request of a native chief set a trap for a leopard which had terrorised a village in the Kilossa district. The gun in the trap exploded and a native reported that the leopard had been killed; but on the approach of the party, the animal sprang from the trap, . and, together with Nir. Turnley, disappeared into a six-foot pit. When Major Bradstock reached _ the pit he found Mr. Turnley. who is a •well-built man, wrestling with the leopard. For some moments it was impossible to render assistance, but, finally, acting on the instructions of Major Brad stock, Mr. Turnley forced the leopard at arm’s length from him until a risky shot killed the animal. Mr. Turnley was badly mauled, but is expected to recover. . ■
