THE SOCCER TEST TEAM
CANTERBURY QUERIES. Sir, —Why haa not Canterbury secured representation in either of the two Soccer Testa? The “Cantabs” defeat of the Australians at Ashburton last Wednesday had far more merit than the Wellington win, for the condition of the ground was admirably adapted to the visitors’ style of play. To do justice to himself and the Canterbury players, why was not selector Salmon present at the Ashburton fixtrue? Perhaps he sacrificed duty for the plaudits of the Wellingtonians in welcoming the victorious All Blacks last Tuesday? .Is this playing the game? Has Mr. Salmon ever seen Barwell, the Canterbury outside right, in action I know what lam talking about when I say this player would be worth £4OOO to any professional team in the Old Country at the' present time. Brundel, the Otago man. m-’ be good, but any critic who knows the first thing about football and has seen these two lads in action must give the Canterbury player first choice. There is not a finer outside right in New Zealand, and I have seen all that are reputed cracks. Mr. Salmon was present nt the South Island match. Did he ever see a finer exhibition of goal-keeping than that of Wilson ? 1 give Mr. Salmon gratis for nothing, the opinions of the Aussies after being bbaten last Wednesday: “Tho hardest keeper to beat they have met in New Zealand.” It is up to Bert Salmon to ait up and take notice. Wellington is not the only nebble on the beach. Fivo caps to Wellington and none to the other victors is a little “over the odds.” Did Mr. Salmon know that Wilson had an English amateur cap?—l am, etc.. ■ F. L. OUNDER. Christchurch, June 26.
