RETAIL PRICES FOR N.Z. MEAT IN GREAT BRITAIN
Sir,—The controversy, re tho above bv your correspondents, Messrs. Polson, Montgomerie, and Sir M alter Buchanan should easily be settled. Probably they are each one correct according to the source cf information. It is quite feasible for 20 gentlemen to cable Home for retail prices, and each one to get a different quotation. In t any large centre imported meats in all their* varying! qualities are eftit by every grade of meat purveyor, from the ‘Slums to the West End. Down in the Slums at night time, under a flaring naptha lamp, you can buy New Zealand meat for less money than in New Zealand. The other extreme is a high c ass family trade West End shop spiling it at three or four times as much, but to define the varying grades of tradesmen cutting imported meat, and all charging different prices requires an abler pen than mine. But to an experienced Homo retailer it is quite plain. The knowledge is not easily acquired, seven years’ apprenticeship entitles a person to qualify as an improver, so no wonder it is a bit mystifying to outsiders looking on. Verb. bap. I am, etc., "OXONIAN.”
