NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glencoe. Acceptances for the first day’s handicaps of. the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting, which opens on. Thursday, close to-night. ’ The Oamaru meeting will be held on Friday and Saturday next. Island was almost as heavily backed as Likelihood for the first hurdle race at Ashburton, but the Wellingtonowned animal quite belied his reputation as a good jumper, and at no stage of the race lyas he going like a winner. He stripped very light in condition, and was not started on the second day. Mr. W. R. Keniball intends sending a team to race at Wingatui next month. It will consist of Birkenclla, Bonetter, Weldone, Gladful, and Tenterfield. Rational’s victory,, at Hawera . on Thursday marks his fifth success this season, and in addition he has been second seven times and third once, besides being three times unplaced. He has won nearly 3000 sovs. this season, in addition to 2605 sovs.' last season, a good return for the moderate outlay of 150 guineas expended on his purchase as a yearling. 'The Hawera double, winner Kato has been entered for the principal jumping events at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting. g. Brcreton, who has been lately filling the position of private trainer to Mrs. Perry, severed his connection with the Otatara. establishment last week. King’s Trumpeter is now a stable comrade of Epitaph, Grotesque, Rapine and Co., at NgataraWa, Mr. A. B. Williams having purchased the son of Clarcnccaux and Bon Bord from Mr. W. F. Desha. •
Scornful, who is under the direction of V..H. Colello, at Hastings, is showing up attractively in his work over the schooling fences,at Hastings. The Wellington-owned Triboulet and Auckland have been scratched for all engagements at the Wanganui meeting. Tho chestnut gelding Kohu gave a couple of good displays over the big fences at Hastings last week. He is to be raced at tho. Wanganui and Ellerslie meetings. The English jumping jockey G. Duller must be classed as an exceptionally successful hdrseman when it comes v to crossing fences. During the period from January 1 to March 23 he rode, in 84 races, winning 31 events. Duller’s seat in the saddle is of the pronounced Sloan order. For the two days at Egmont there was a falling off of £20,012 in the totalisator receipts. This continuous loss of revenue by clubs all over the Dominion is suro to affect the amount given in stake-money next season. Sir George Clifford has disposed of Purple Spur to a Chatham Islands sportsman. Though he was not a great success on the tracks, due to unsoundness, tho Antagonist colt should make good at the stud in his island home. Reports from Wingatui mention that Rorke’s Drift has been getting through satisfactory schooling tasks. He will probably in/the big flab event on the first day of' the Oamaru meeting and tackle the hurdles second. The New Zealand Cup winner Roj’al Star continues to get through light tasks at Riccarton. He will not be hurried till the spring. • In j!he. wav of falls at one jump, something approaching a record was cieated at Hurst Park (England) on March 11. At the second last jump in the Kingston Hurdle Handicap twelve of the thirteen starters were Stillion their legs. Then the two leaders fell simultaneously, and six other horses ca&e down over them. High falls at one jump approaches a record in a hurdle race, but though, at first, it seemed certain most of the riders must have boon injured, only one was badly knocked about.
