MR; W. A. G. SKINNER APPOINTED
“‘Yesterday-Mr? W. A. Gr Skinner was ,1. notified that he had been appointed Government Printer in succession to Mr. Marcus Marks, who retires- from the service at the end of the'month. The new head of the Government Printing Office was born at New Plymouth in 1865, but early came to Wellington. • He was educated at "the-' Thorndon School under the late Mr. W. Mowbray, and. was in the same class as his ; predecessor dn the service. On leaving i: school he was-engaged as a reader hoy in the Government Printing- Office,' com- „ mencing there in 1879 when the office was under the control of the late Mr. W. H. Didsbury. Later he was ap- , prenticed as a job printer, typesetting in those days being done by hand. ' Four years later he was ap--pointed to take charge of Government printing works in Lyttelton, where a good deal of Government work was done for the South Island. Later on he was given the- sole charge of the prison printing workshops. He re- - . turned to the Government Printing ' Office in 1894, and in 1905 was appointed overseer of the job-printing branch. ■ Next he became junior overseer, then senior overseer, and supervisor., At that time the .-Minister in. charge of. the Printing Office. Hon. F., M. B. Fisher,' altered the-title of. the. office to . superintendent. Mr. Skinner held this office for ten years. S-.,.Already the new Printer has been. - loaded with congratnlatiohs,' and the anpointmerit is most popular in the office and in the outside printing world.
