PRESS TRIBUTES TO MISS CURTIS’S PLAY FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. —OOPYBIOHT. Sydney, May 8. Tho Sydney papers testify in glowing terms to the excellent display made bv Miss Curtis against the previous champion, Mrs. Molesworth. It is believed' that Miss Curtis’s triumph in the first set, which is characterised as a “Marathon,” was responsible for shaking the Queenslander early, as she never had previously been extended by her opponents. Tho “Herald” says the crowd was worked up to a pitch of enthusiasm seldom approached in Sydney, and towards the end of the final play on the other courts was momentarily suspended till tho applause ■ and cheering which greeted Miss Curtis’s victory (had subsided. The applause was a tribute of appreciation by the Sydney people, who had, metaphorically, taken Miss Curtis to their hearts as one who had added to a degree of proficiency seldom seen in th® true spirit of sport, in which the importance' of a contest never impairs the enjoyment of the game. The “Herald” remarks on the coincidence that Miss Curtis is the first New Zealander to win the tennis championship title since Miss Powdrell secured it thirteen years ago, and that Miss Powdrell’s success was also separated by thirteen years from the win of Miss Nunneley, the only other Now Zealander with her name on the championship roll.—Press Assn.
