GOLF

THE WAIWETU CLUB OPENING OF THE SEASON The official opening of the Waiwetu Golf Club took place on Saturday afternoon, and was celebrated by an exhibition match between Arthur Ham, professional to the Wellington Golf Club, and Arthur Brooks, professional to the Hutt Golf Club. There was quite a large attendance of members and visitors, especially considering that the weather was anything but agreeable. Mr. R. (J. Kirk, the persident of the club, who is also chairman of the council of the New Zealand Golf Association, made a few remarks, and declared-the links open-fgr play. The match was then played, and resulted in a win for Brooks by five up and four to play. Brooks was playing in fine form, and Ham was just that lit-' tie bit off colour which gave his opponent a chance of victory, which he did not fail to take. I The driving throughout was very fine, and of really good length, considering that there is practically no run on the Waiwetu course. This course, with a very easy appearance, is undoubtedly the most difficult of any course in the district, and to thoso who have not played over it the lengths of the approaches are hard to judge, as the two professionals found' on Saturday. The spectators were delighted with the exhibition, and no doubt it has done them a great deal ef good. More of such matches would undoubtedly be greatly to the benefit of amateur golf. "Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Cook, the wife of Mr. G. Cook, the popular captain of the club, and, with the assistance of Mrs. Walters and cither lady members of the committee, was genially dispensed to members and visitors. It was agreed by all that in spite of the weather a most pleasant and entertaining afternoon had been spent. LOWER HUTT CLUB. A silver button bogey competition figured on tho card of the Lower Hutt Club on Saturday afternoon, when 23 playere competed. The winner turned up in W. Bridge, who finished 5 up on bogey. J. L. Black and B. Morris tied for second place, with 3 up. Black (scr.) did the best round of the afternoon, taking 72 for the full course, and playing fine golf' throughout. MORNINGTON CLUB. The ladies’ section of the Mornington Club have had an interesting competition in progress during the past month. This was for first and second trophies, presented by -,M rs - Walker, for the player returning the best three pards out of five medal rounds. Tho competition resulted in a tie between Mrs. Whitehead and Mrs. Hawson, and in the play-off the former succeeded in annexing first place.
