TO BE ENCOURAGED IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS ANNUAL PRIZES OFFERED A lady residing in Wellington, who desired that her name should not be published, wrote as follows to the Board of Governors of the Wellington Colleges:— “Feeling strongly the desirability of encouraging a proper spirit of civic responsibility amongst the growing youth of this country, I am desirous of instituting a prize competition amongst the girls attending the Wellington High School, and amongst the boys attending the Wei-, lington Co’ege, having for its object the study and encouragement of a wholesome civic spirit and of loyalty to the Crown and the Dominion. ... I am prepared to hand over one £lOO debenture of the New Zealand Government Loan maturing in 1930 and producing annually £4 10s. interest, on the understanding that the income, is to be equally divided between the two colleges, and to he awarded annually in respect to essays upon 'some specific subject relating to the inculcation of ‘good citizenship, and bearing upon the duty of citizens to one another and to the State. Arter suggesting conditions for the awarding of the prizes, the donor desired that the prizes to be won by f the girls bo known as the Hilda E.. Moorhouse Memorial Prize, and those by the boys as the “R. Sefton Adams Memorial Prize,” suitable inscriptions being placed in each book. , On the motion of the chairman, the board gratefully accepted the offer, with all conditions, with thanks.
