SALVATION ARMY CONGRESS
The Salvation Army’s sixth Dominion congress opened on Tuesday evening in the Citadel, Vivian Street. Officer delegates from all parts of the Dominion were received by Commissioner Hodder, the territorial leader. A report of great interest affecting all branches of the work, and covering a period of seven years, was delivered by> the commissioner. This revealed that an increase of 1041 soldiers had been niadc to the rolls,' whilst an increase of 4402 open-air meetings and 12,575 'indoor gatherings had been made per annum. The young people’s section of 1 the work was in a satisfactory state, Ino fewer than 15,941 additional young I people having attended. Tbe self-de-nial appeal had risen from £19,000 in '1914 to £50.000 in 1921. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) welcomed the delegates. He paid a high tribute to the work of the organisation, and had been struck with the wonderful progress made during the seven years, under review. “During the time the war was on,” said Mr. Wright, “many of us hoped for a spiritual revival of the churches of God. I® it not true, officers of the Salvation Army, that this has not failed to come about, and that you have found the way even more difficult?” Throughout to-day and to-morrow, officers’ councils will be conducted, to be followed on Sunday next by big gatherings in the town, in the morning and at night, in the Basin Reserve In the afternoon, and in additi/h to these meetings special demonstrations will be held in the Town Hall.
