N.Z. LADIES’ IMPROVED PLAY’ WIN THREE MATCHES OUT OF SIX (Reo. April 27, 10.25 p.m.) Sydney,. April 27. The tennis tournament was continued to-day in fine weather. The courts were in excellent condition, despite rain in the early morning. The New Zealander’s play showed further improvement, Miss Curtis making better use of the drier courts. Miss Paton (New Zealand) beat Miss Rendall (Victoria), s—-7, 6—4, 10-q-8. This was a fairly even match. Miss Paton led 5 to 1 in the last set, which see-sawed to the end, the New Zealander winning by superior placing. Miss Mountain (lUctoria) beat Miss AVellwood (New Zealand), 6—3, 6 —4. This was a vigorous game, the former playing with greater precision. Miss Curtis (New Zealand) beat Mrs. Lister (Victoria), 6—3, 4—6, 6—4. A feature of Miss Curtis’s play was excellent volleying and the keeping of an accurate length. Miss Boyd (Victoria) - beat Miss MacFarlane (New Zealand), 6-3, 10—12,. 6—l. The New Zealander emerged from her shell in the second set, displaying brilliant form, especially in driving. In the doubles Mrs. Lister and Miss Boyd (Victoria) beat Misses Paton and AA’ellwood (New Zealand), 6—6 —-4. The winners were the superior pair, their accuracy in volleying being the chief factor in their victory. Misses Curtis and McFarlane (New Zealand) beat' Misses Mountain and Rendall (Victoria), 6 —l, 2 —6, 6 —2. The New Zealanders dovetailed excellently, Miss Curtis showing keen discrimination in measuring her shots. The improved condition of the courts enabled her to make use of her pace. Her overhead work was good. Miss McFarlane was always on the go, and effectively employed her useful backhand stroke. The New Zealanders will play again on Monday.—Press Assn.
