The East Leicester by-election, rendereel necessary by tho appointment of Sir Gurdon Hewart as Lord Chief Justice, resulted Banton (Labour) 14,062 Marlow (Coalition Liberal) ... 8,710 Allen (Independent Liberal) ... 3,825 Mr. Banton is a prominent local employer, who is something of a dreamer, his pet scheme being that workmen should down tools in summertime and proceed to the countryside with their wives and families, and work at harvest, returning to the workshops in the autumn. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [The voting at the general election was: —Sir Gordon Hewart (Coalition Liberal), 18,024; G. Banton (Labour), 6697.]
