ETNA IN ERUPTION
VILLAGERS FLEEING. Rome, March 29. Mount Etna is in violent eruption, and lava is flowing from all sides of the crater. The villagers are fleeing. The’-e have been several earthquakes in the Palermon and Messina districts lately. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
[Mount Etna, whose name is derived from the Greek word for “burn,” ’is on the east coast of Sicily, and is. one of the most. famous volcanoes in the world. A large area of its slopes is of extraordinary fertility, and carries a very dense population. Etna, is reported to have erupted in the Bth and sth centuries, 8.C., and in 125, 121 and 43, B.C. There have been many other serious eruptions, notably in 1169, 1669, 1830, 1852. 1865, 1879. 1886, 1892. 1899,' and 1910.]
