OPIUM SMOKING
CHINAMAN FINED £35 Another Chinaman, Ah Lye, appeared before Mr, F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday morning on a charge of smoking opium mid having cpitim in his possession. When asked to plead he stated that he was unwell, and smoked the opium to soothe his ailment. He, however, denied being in possession of the narcotic. The Magistrate: If he was smoking it he must have been in possession, of When the interpreter explained this to accused, he stated that he only had the opium that was in the pipe, but the evidence showed differently. Constable Thom stated that when he visited accused’s house in Haining Street during the week-end lie found accused in a room by himself. ' He was smoking opium at the time, and was in a dazed condition. Witness searched the premises and found a quantity of opium in a tin, which was produced. He also discovered the usual paraphernalia used by people addicted to this habit. When no was examining the tin the accused tried to knock it out of his hand., i The Magistrate fined accused £25 for being in possession of opium and £lO for smoking it.
