EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

The monthly inesting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last evening. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather), the Acting-Mayor (Councillor AV. H. Shortt) presided, and there were also present-: Councillors C. Hartridtce, H. McGill, T. Pilcher, 0. A. Marquis, and C. L. Green. Tho secretary of the Wellington Harbour Board wrote setting out the terras and conditions upon which the board was prepared to carry out extension work at the R-ona Bay wharf. The Acting-Mayor moved that it be a recommendation to the Ferrv Board that the terms offered by the Harbour Board bo accepted, and that body bo asked to proceed with the work as soon as possible. 'Phis was agreed to. The acting-general manager (Mr. R. B. Witty), in bis report, stated that in his opinion the Karamu gravel pit bad been worked out, and it would be necessary at an. early date to find a fresh source of supply. The fence round the Recreation Ground had been completed uncording.to specifications, and a start had been made with the building of the stone wall. The special soil for top-dressing the cricket pitches would be taken from the land recently purchased by the council. Reporting upon the coal depot, the Acting-Mayor stated that the receipts for the period from Anril 1. 1921. to March 16. 1922, were £156 15s. 6d., mid the expenditure £2028 15s. 6d. The value of coal and firewood in stock in the yard was £971. 15s. “The residents refuse to purchase tho coal we have in stock,” reported Mr. Witty ; “it is deteriorating. I propose, therefore, to unload It on to the ferries at the rate of, say, six tons per week, and suggest tho purchase of 50 tons of the hesi household coal at once, so that we may recover some share of patronage before the winter sets in.” Tlie manager’s .report was adopted, and ho was given authority to arrange for a sitnnlv of superior household'coal.
