FALL IN WAGES
AUTOMATIC REDUCTIONS IN BRITAIN THROUGH DROP IN COST OF LIVING BY TELEGRAPH-PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT. London, March 23. Wages in practically all trades are suffering further automatic reductions through the fall in the cost of living. The Civil servants’ reductions will operate from April 1, when the war bonus will be considerably diminished. Tlie shipbuilding and engineers’ employees are opposing reductions of 16s. 6d. recently proposed by the employers as the subject of a ballot, but tho employers are adamant. Working men generally urge that in view of tho automatic reductions in wages rents should also be reduced.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ENGINEERS’ DISPUTE BALLOT TO BE TAKEN ON EMPLOYERS’ TERMS London, March 23. The shipbuilding and engineering trades have decided to take a ballot on the terms submitted in the employers’ lock-out notices, and have asked the employers to postpone the lock-out until tho result of tho ballot is known. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. LONG NEGOTIATIONS FAIL (Rec. March 24 8.30 p.m.) London, March 24. Labour leaders and employers’ representatives maintained prolonged negotiations yesterday endeavouring to settle the engineering dispute.
