The Minister of Lands (Mr. Guthrie) ancUthe Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Nosworthy) left for the south last night. The Minister of Education (Mr. Parr) is expected back in Wellington to-day after a visit to Auckland. Sir Joseph Ward returned to Wellington yesterday from the north. Tlje appointment of Sir Heaton Rhodes to be Commissioner of State Forests and of the Hon. G. J. Anderson to be Minister of Marine is announced formally in the Gazette. Sir Francis Bell has resigned from the two offices.

Tho Governor-General has recognised the appointment of Dlr. Chao-Song Loo as Chinese Consul in Western Samoa.

The appointment of Dlr. E. O. Hales tn be Assistant Public Trustee has been gazetted. The Government Printer, Dlr.' Marcus Marks, is retiring from his position as from May 31. Dlr. Dlarks has had 43 years’ service with the Government Printing Office, ,361 years of this being continuous. Joining the staff as a reader’s assistant in 1877, Dlr. Dlarks had continuous service until November, 1883, when, owing to a far-reaching retrenchment policy, his services, with those of all other single men in the Department, were dispensed with “until such time as tho period of depression hud passed away. Two years later, in January, .1886, when he was on the staff of the Melbourne “Age,” Mr. Marks accepted an offer to return to tho service of the Government, where ho has boon continuously since. Dlr Marks was supervisor of Hansard before ho took control of the Government Printing Office several years ago.

Mr. F. G. Barnby. assistant master at the Dnnnevirko North School, has been appointed headmaster of tho Dloutoa School, in the Manawatu district.

The City Council last evening carried a motion of sympathy with Mr. R. Tait, the Acting-Town Clerk, in connection with the death of his mother, Mrs. R. Tait, senior. The Mayor, Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., said that the late Mrs. Tait was a very old settler, and had reached the age of 89. She had done a very great deal of good in her time, and was highly respected everywhere. Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Halpin, who have been in business for some time in Cuba Street, are about to take up their residence in Auckland. At yesterday’s gathering of the Te Aro Advancement Association, Mr. Halpin, who had occupied the position of president, was presented with a leather travelling bag, in recognition of his past services. Mr. Patrick, who made the presentation, spoke in high terms of the great help he had always been in their work.

Mr. G. Hornig, who has retired from the position of secretary of the Te Aro Advancement Association owing to pressure of business, was presented with a case of pipes at the meeting yesterday, and eulogistic reference was made to the manner in which he had carried out his duties.

Mr. H. T. Thodey, manager of the Bank of Australasia, has been appointed sub-inspector at Wellington, in succession to Mr. J. A. McLeod, who has been appointed manager at Gisborne.

The death is reported from Nelson of Mr. Leonard Duthie. The late Mr. Duthie was the youngest son of the late John Duthie. of Wellington, and had been engaged in farming at Wakefield.

Mr M. O. Stewart, chief clerk for Huddart-Parkor, Ltd., will .leave by the Ulimaroa to-day on a visit to Sydney. Mr. Stewart will return to Wellington by the MahenO. Lieutenant-Colonel H. Avery, D. 5.0., Wellington, has completed his course at the Staff College, Camberley, and is at present engaged at the War Office. He will leave for New Zealand about the first week in April.
