March 1, 10.25 p.m.) London, February 28. Mr. Lloyd George, in the House of Commons, said the Protectorate' was no longer a satisfactory form of relationship between the British Empire and Egypt/ bur at present there was no Government in Egypt which could give adequate safeguards for Imperial interests. Therefore the Government had decided to proceed by unilateral declaration. In this course they had Lord Allenby’s whole-hearted support. Martial law would be abolished as soon as an Act of indemnity was passed. In the final clause of the declaration four matters were absolutely reserved to the discretion of tho Imperial Government: Firstly, the security of communications ; secondly, defence against all foreign aggression; thirdly, protection of foreign interests in Egypt and the protection of minorities; fourthly, the Sudan. —Aus.-N.Z.
