EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

The Eastbourne Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather) presiding. There were also present Councillors Green, -Marquis, Pilcher, Giles, C. Hartridge, and Shortt. Mr. S. Harcourt wrote asking the assistance of the council in preserving the native bush on his section of 121 acres at Muritai. The Mayor said that he desired to express his appreciation of Mr. Harcourt’s efforts to preserve the bush. Benefit would be derived, by the council acipTng him. A letter of appreciation was ordered to 'be sent to Mr. Harcourt. It was decided to grant the Muritai Tennis Club a rebate of half its rates. The headmaster of the Muritai School asked whether there was any possibility of children’s bathing sheds ] being erect-, ed this summer, emphasising the need for them. The matter was referred to a committee. He also wrote regarding th» matter of tree-planting on the sea-i'ronf. Ratepayers wrote requesting the “speeding up” of the 8.10 a.m. boat, which they contended never left on time.. There were confirmed late-comers in Eastbourne. Late arrival at work meant the development of an “apologetic manner,” which was not a good trait lot ieaidents of Eastbourne. “It’s a pity,” said the Mayor, biu the boat is usually fairly punctual. ••(.an the passengers be loaded in the. time?” asked a councillor, adding that he was a late-comer and always took advantage of the delay. The boat usually left at about 8.15 a.m. It was decided to have the- matter remedied as far as possible.
