September 19, 8.10 p.m.) Brisbane, September 19. .An explosion, believed to Aave been caused by gas, occurred at the Mulligan coal mine, in the Cairns district, and entombed seventy miners. About fifty surface hands are working feverishly to rescue them, but the superintendent engineer holds out little hope that any of them will bo rescued alive. There were heartrending scenes <it the Mount Mulligan mine. The relatives of the entombed miners gathered at the pit-head when the news of the disaster, which occurred at 9.30 in the morning, was received. Inside tho mine feverish activity prevails, where a mountain of debris has to be removed. The rescuers are working until they drop from exhaustion. Tho task facing them is a stupendous one, as , hundreds of tons have fallen in the drive.—Press Assn.
