ALEXANDER WATSON

Selections from the works of Dicken# were the principal feature of the recital given in the Concert Chamber by Mr. Alexander Watson on Saturday night. Mr. Watson is peculiarlj- well qualified to interpret the kindly humour and simple pathos of Dickens, and his audience had a particularly pleasant evening. Some of the selections were from "A Christmas Carol,” including Bo'b Cratchitt’s Christmas dinner and tha nephew’s party. Mr. Watson was dcITghtfuCy successful in presenting this genial fare, with its savour of warmhearted Yuletide customs. Then ho gave the description of a wild night at sea from "Martin Chuzzlewit," and turning again to the humorous, be told his audience something of Mr. Winkle's troubles from "Pickwick Papers.” The reception accorded those selections was a hearty and weil-deserved tribute to the merit of the performance. Ir tho second part of tmo programme Mr. Watson recited three popular pieces, "The Highwayman" (Hoyes), "Knit.tin' at the Stockin’” (Ballew). and “The Rule of Three” (W. W. Jacobs). Mr. Watson will conclude his Wellington season this week. His programme this evening will include the diverting Mnlvolio scenes from “Twelft Night, with Sir Toby and his companions in their uproarious mood. “Herve Riel" (Browning). "Gemini and Virgo" (Cab verley), and "Mrs. B.’s Alarms” (Jarnos Payni), will be among the other selections.
