SATURDAY’S GAMES. ' Football conditions on Saturday were not of the best for players or spectators, the cold wind proving very unpleasant to the latter, whilst teams playing with the wind had all .the advantage. Petone met Central, * and despite the fact that they were not at their full strength, they proved successful. Athletic defeated City after a fast game. PETONE 27. CENTRAL 3. At Newtown Park, Petone met Central. The suburban team were minus three or four of their usual team through sickness, "Doc." Nicholls, their captain, being a noticeable absentee. Central won the toes, and played with the strong wind in their favour. Petone commenced with great dash, and, suiting themselves to the conditions, soon had their opponents on the defence. From a loose rush Zimmerman pitted up and scored. Baulko failed with the kick. Central retaliated, and from a fine piece of open play Ryan scored. Hedges’s kick failed. After a period of’ open play Childs scored from a nice movement, both backs and forwards participating. Baulke failed to convert. Another - combined effort by Petone backs and forwards resulted in R. Shanahan getting across the line just before half-time. The opening stages of the second half saw Central set up a very strong attack, hut their efforts Jacked finish. Petone then took charge, and Childs securing, he passed to Haddock, who scored. H. Nunn converted. A few minutes later Shanahan secured, and passed to Tetley, who scored after a good run, H. Nunn converting. After some give-and-take play Shanahan scored from a fine passing rush. n. Nunn converted. Just on time H. Nunn secured, and passed to F. Nunn, who cut-in nicely, and scored. 11. Nunn again converted, making four successful attempts in succession—a good performance, considering the strong wind that was blowing. Mr. C. Murphy was referee. * ATHLETIC 18, CITY 3. At Emerson Street Athletic defeated Cif.y by 18 points to 3. THIRD GRADE. At Newtown Park Athletic defeated Central by 11 points to 6. Mr. Snow was referee.
