POLICE AND CIVIL CASES Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., hud * very •mall charge sheet to deal with in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Arthur Millward, Arthur Holmes, Alfred Wildman, and Thomas Stevenson, firemen out of work, were found at 6.15 a.m. yesterday on board tho s.s. Port Napier when the police searched the vessel prior to her departure. They were charged with attempting to secrete the'ineelves on tho vessel without the knowledge of tho owners, master, or mate. The men stated that they were out of work, and were on the vessel in tho hope of being engaged. They were convicted and discharged. Georeo A. Johnston was fined ss. for drunkenness; for using obscene language ho was fined 205., and was ordered to pay 20s. expenses of witnesses. Convicted of drunkenness for the fourth time in six months, William Woods was fined 205., in default three days’ imprisonment. Mary Johnston; an old offender, was •ent to gaol for three months for being an idle and disorderly person, in that •he possessed insufficient lawful means of support. Carr, £26 18s. 6d.. costs £'3 Is. On a iudgment summons, R. H. Bright was ordered to pay Mandel and Carr, Ltd.. £24 19s. -6d., in default twentyfour days' imprisonment in Auckland gaol, the warrant to lie suspended if he pavs £lO to-day and the balance by instalments of £5 per month. TENEMENT CASES. Mr. F. K. Hunt. S.M., disposed of the tenement cases. Ellen Aston was ordered to give up possession of a dwelling to Samuel Free in twenty-four hours, and to pay £35 7s. 3d. rent and £4 Is. costs. Mrs. J. Monkhouse is to give up possession of a tenement to Francisco Monopli by August 19, and to pay £3 Ib. 6d. costs. CLAIM FOR RENT AND DAMAGES. Joseph Boucher, indenter (Mr. J. A. Scott) sought to recover from J. Hubbers. waterside worker (Mr. A. B. Sievwright) the sum of £7G 10s. The statement of claim set out that on March 15 last tho defendant was tenant of a house at Baliina Bay belonging to the plaintiff (the rental being 275. 6d. per week), and that four weeks’ rent, amounting to £5 10s., had not been paid. On March 15 defendant wont into occupation of a house belonging to plaintiff at a rental of 80s. per week, none of which had been paid, and there was owing £2l in respect of rent. There was also a claim for £5O damages alleged to have been done to the dwelling at Baliina Bay. For the defence it was urged that there was no damage. There was £5 10s. owing, and this amount had been paid into court. * After hearing evidence, the Magistrate gave judgment . in favour of defendant, who was allowed ' £3 3s. costs.
