MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE THE PROBLEM OF NEW CASES Messrs. A. Macintosh, C. Watson, J. F. Aldrich, and W. Ferguson attended the monthly meeting of the Wellington War Relief Association executive yesterday afternoon. Id. were • passed for payment. Application* for Loans. The Finance Committee reported that at ita meeting on July 7 twelve applications were considered. Of these, one application for loan of <9156 6s. Bd., with which to pay overdue tradesmen’s acI counts in respect to a small business established at Petone, was granted, security being a signed agreement not to allow the stock to fall be4ow the value of <9300 during th® currency of the loan, and a bill of sale over that stock. Six ' applications were in respect to the acquisition of residential property, the value aggregating <2969. Of these, three were declined, ho economical loss being evident; one needed no further action, and the remaining two were granted, the security being registered second mortgage. A further application was for a loan of <9200 with which to pay the applicant's brother a year's wages, but there was no economic loss nor evidence of permanent partial disablement, and as the claim was in no way attributable to war service it was declined. Two loans, one of <9146 for the purchase of a milking machine, and the other of <9lOO in respect to necessary improvements to a farm, were granted. The two remaining applications were in respect to the readlustment of repayments. There were five applications yet to be dealt with, the total amount involved being <2BOO. Three were in respect to the acquisition of residential property, one in connection with a farm, one in respect to the disposal of a motor-car in Auckland. and the fifth for temporary suspension of repayments. A special meeting of the committee would be Ireld shortly, and the cases disposed of. Claims Considered. The Applications Committee reported that since June 24 it had met on four occasions, and had dealt with 185 applications. The total number of claims received during tho period June 24 to July 26 was 349, comprising 56 new applications and 293 renewals and reconsiderations. Of the new applications, 28 were the responsibility of other societies and 28 wore the Wellington society's responsibility, together with four Australian arid four Imperial cases. There were still 164 cases under action, of which 68 were the responsibility of other societies and 96 the Wellington society’s responsibility, the latter including two Australian and one Imperial case. Since Juno 24 the daily callers at the office had averaged sixteen, the total for the period being 379. Of these, 175 applications were for direct assistance and 161 for indirect assistance, the latter entailing actually a larger amount of work than that which arose from claims for * direct assistance. The reports were adopted.
