SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Viscountess Jellicoe will ba the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Lindo Ferguson during their stay in Dunedin. Miss Barton (Featherston) is visiting Wellington for the race week gaieties. Mr.. Mrs., and Miss Rutherford (Canterbury) are visiting Wellington.

Captain and the Hon. Mrs. Tahu Rhodes are expected to arrive in New Zealand by the Reniuera in September. Mr. and Mrs. George Hutton, “Bangor,” will probably be passengers to the Dominion by the same steamer.

Mr. and Mrs. Wadworth are spending a few days in Wellington before leaving for Sydney.

Miss Grace Calder, Timaru, has been appointed matron of the Ashburton County Hospital, subject to the approval of the Minister of Health.

Mrs. Alfred Caselberg (Masterton) is visiting Wellington.

The death occurred at Greymouth of Mrs. George Anderson, of Paroa. The deceased lady, who was 37 years of age, was a native of Blenheim, and was well kuown in Marlborough as Nurse Olive Peake. She received her training as a nurse at the Wairau, Hospital, and was afterwards for some time \n charge of the Cottage Hospital at Havelock.

Mrs. H. H. Beetham (Brancepeth, Mnsterton) is visiting Wellington.

Mrs. Lindo Ferguson, of Dunedin, Mies Boyle, Mr. and Miss Cotterill, Miss Gould, of Christchurch, Mr. and Mrs. Bond, of Timaru, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen, of Morrinsville, are guests at Government House.

Sister Margaret G. Davies, A.R.R.C., now home sister at Trentham Military Hospital, has been, selected as the candidate for the Red Cross scholarship. Sister Davies has a splendid nursing record. and also long war service, and from the certificates produced is an eminently suitable representative of New Zealand nurses. Sister Davies will leave for England next month, and carry out her training at Bedford College.

A very pleasant “at home” was held at the residence of Mrs. Oscar Ellis, Tasman Street. Various competitions, musical items by the Misses Eileen Driscoll, Barry, Watkins, Fenton, and M’Dermott, and clever dancing by a small girl, Maureen Murphy, were among the many attractions. The proceeds (a little over £5O) are towards the St. Mary's rebuilding fund.

Mrs. Fitchett, president of the Hon. Division of the Women’s National Reserve in Auckland, called a meeting on Friday for the purpose of establishing a rest home in Auckland similar to the one established in Courtenay Place, Wellington, and in other centres. The Mayor prosided, and spoke of the able ami valuable work done by the National Reserve, land Isa id he was (sure jtlie councillors would lie sympathetic with the proposals and assist the movement as much as possible. Dr. Buckingham, on behalf of the medical profession, said that from a strictly medical x iew-point, over-fatigue was the worst thing possible for both mother and baby, and the absence of such a rest room in the city led. to much petty suffering, ohe did not suggest, that the rest room should be regarded as a picturesque addition to the city, but should he designed essentially for utility. She moved tliat the meeting, affirm the necessity and desirability of a rest room in the citv. The Hon. A. M. Myers.said that a rest room was established in Wellington. and from the boon that it was proving io mothers in that city he would urge the establishment of a building in Auckland with his full power. Ho ventured to say that the <ork done in Wellington was simply invaluable. The motion was carried unanimously, and an influential commil tee formed to proceed with the matter. Red Cross Executive.

A meeting of the New Zealand Executive Committee of the Red Cross and Order of St. John was held yesterday afternoon. The Hon. Dr. Collins was in the chair, aud there were present: Lady Luke, representing the New Zealand Council. Mr. Flesher (Canterbury), Air. A Roberts (Otago), and Mr. Chisholm (secretary). In connection with the Red Cross Nursing Scholarship, the question of the remuneration to be paid the selected nurse on her return to New Zealand was discussed, and it was moved and carried that she he paid not less than the highest rate paid at the time of her return to New Zealand by the Health Department to its district nurses. The sum of £250 will cover Iwoks, etc., while away, and £uo is to bo granted for personal expenses. It was reported that there wero 2. applicants for the scholarship—none, however, from Dunedin. A condition of the scholarship is that the holder on her return to New Zealand guarantees to remain under the council for two years. In regard to the request from luvercarmll that Southland b? constituted a separate “centre,” with direct communion* lion with headquarters, it was decided that the time was not opportune, but that Southland should correspond direct with headquarters when necessary. It was pointed out that, according to the constitution such action could not be undertaken. With regard Dunedin request that executive meetings be held in different centres so as to stimulate interest in the work, it was decided that too much time would be.entailed m valine to some of the centres, and that Wellington was .the most central place in which to hold* meetings. AN INVESTITURE INTERESTING CEREMONY AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE. Yesterday evening His Excellency the Governor-General held an investiture at Government House, when the badges of Orders and decorations presented by His Majesty the King were awarded to their recipients. The ceremony was held in the ballroom, and among the large gathering of guests at the reception which followed were the relatives and friends of the recipients. Close upon half-psat eight Their Excellencies entered the ballroom and took their places upon the dais, with the Hon. Lucy, Jellicoe following shortly afterwards, and aso taking her place there. A guard of honour, comprising Major-General Chaytor, Brigadier-General Richardson, Sur-geon-General Sir Donald M'Gavin, General Hart, and Commander Williams, preceded Their Excellencies, and stood to the right of the dais during the ceremony of investiture. Several military decorations were awarded!, and as they were pinned upon their recipients, the circumstances in which they wero won were briefly related to the gathering, a proceeding which wan very much appreciated by everyone. Among those who were invested were Miss Greta Ewen, of Heretaunga, Mrs. E. I. Lovell, of Hawera, and Mrs. Bull, of Hunterville. Mrs. Baxter of Wellington, as next-of-kin, received the Military Cross iron by sher husband, the late Lieutenant A. S. Baxter. At the conclusion of the ceremony Their Excellencies shook hands' with the guests, who made their wav into the drawingroom and into the billiardroom. where supper was served. Very beautiful flowers were arranged in the rooms—violets, freesias, orchids, arum lilies, and jonquils while in the ballroom, the poinsettias, which banked one end, made brilliant clusters of colouring with their scarlet star-shaped flowers. An orchestra stationed in the corridor played all the latest music. Lady Jellicoe wore a frock of lemon brocade with a pointed train and corsage draped on one shoulder with gold lace. A diamond necklet end ornaments were also worn. The Hon. Lucy Jellicoe wore a frock of deep salmon pink tulle, with bands of satin to match. Mrs. Love.l (Hawera) was in petunia coloured, crepe de chine, touched with gold; Mrs. Bull (Hunterville) wore black satin, ar “P e< j with silver embroidered ninon; Miss Greta Ewen was in black brocade, draped over black satin; and Mrs. Baxter wore lavender velvet, draped georgette of the samo shade.
