The police business at the Afagistrate’s Court yesterdav was taken by Air. F. K. Hunt, S.AI. Raymond Al. J. Howard, for whom Mr. J. S. Hanna appeared, pleaded guilty to tho theft of a pair of boots, valued at .1:3 155., and also to the theft of a. gold Waltham watch, valued at A'lo, the property’ of some person unknown. Howard was a ’porter at the People’s Palace, and when a parcel containing the boots arrived for a boarder he made away’ with them. When, he was arrested and searched the watch was found in his possession, and he admitted having taken it from a portmanteau. The Magistrate said that the public who used the hotels and boardinghouses had not the same opportunity of looking after their belongings as they had.at their own homes, and required to bo protected. Howard was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent.
Frederick Bowtell, who was convicted of sleeping out and having no means of support, was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on condition that he stayed at the Salvation Army Home. Mrs. Daniels, a resident of Tory Street, was convicted of using obscene language, and'was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. A prohibition order was issued against her. Phillip Timothy Paul, charged with failing to maintain his wife, was remanded to appear at Wanganui on Tuesday next.
Walter R. Russell, a youth, pleaded guilty to the theft of an overcoat, valued, at £6 155., the property of Cyril E. Allen. The overcoat was taken from a bicycle that was standing in a .lane. The probation officer said that he had made inquiries, and was inclined to think that the lad was more a fool than a criminal. TTe thought that a term of probation would do the 'boy good. Russell was placed on probation for a period of two years. For failing to attend drill, Arthur W. Hunter was fined £5 and costs.
