SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss G. Opie, M.A., M.Sc., principal of the C.M.S. Ladies’ College, Colombo, Ceylon, is visiting her father, Mr. C, 11. Opie, of New Brighton, Christchurch. Mrs. H. Y. Widdowson, wife of Dunedin’s .Senior. Magistrate, died on -Sunday after a long illness. Mrs. Rhodes and Miss Rhodes (Bluecliffs) have returned to the south from a visit to Wellington. The engagement is announced of Miss Nancy Ellen Chaiton, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Chaiton. of Wanganui (late of Wellington), to Mr. Allan Lockhart Hamilton, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Faniilton, Wellington. Another of the early colonists died on Saturday evening in the person of the widow of the late Mr. A. E. Davis, of NFlalkett. The deceased' lady was born at Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1840, and came to New Zealand with her husband in the sailing ship William Miles in 1860. She lived at Addington, West Eyreton, and at Halkett. Fifteen years ago she retired l to her late residence, Matai Street, Ricoarton, Christchurch. Mr. Davis died eight years ago. Mrs. Davis had sixteen children, six sons and seven daughters surviving her. The wedding of Mr. Walter M’Donald, of Foxton, and Miss . Eva Mooney, of Wellington, took place at St. Joseph’s Church, Buckle Street, recently, the Rev, Father 'Cullen officiating. The bride and bridegroom left for a visit to Sydney. A farewell evening was given at Tren* them Military Hospital on Tuesday by the patients for Miss Margaret Monck. ton, who has been in charge of the Red Cross Club for the soldiers ever since its inception, and who is leaving to M married. In the earlier part of the evening a concert programme was given which was followed by supper and dancing. On behalf of the soldieipatients, Mr. Johnston presented MisS Monckton with a gold wristlet watch, and expressed the deep appreciation which was felt for what she had done for them. On behalf of the nursing and medical staff Miss Thurston, R.R.C., matron of the hospital, presented to the guest of the eveningl a silver and made a speech of appreciation. Other speakers were Colonel Burton, of the Salvation Army, and Colonel Carberry, who both spoke very warmly of Miss Monckton’s work for the patients. Mr. Elliott replied for Miss Monckton. Among the Red Cross visitors who wenout to Trentham for the occasion were Lady Luke, Mrs. Moorhouse, Mrs. Blundell, Mrs. H. Hall, Mrs. Rose, Mik; Low, and Sir John Luke. Mrs. Whiteman played the music for the dancing. Dance in Town Hall.

The dance which was held in the Town Hall last evening, organised by the Mothers’ Help Division of the M omens National Reserve, was a very successful and enjoyable affair.
