STEAMER CANASTOTA OVERDUE

TEN DAYS OUT FROM SYDNEY WITH CARGO OF CASE OIL ABOARD The steamer Canastota is now ten days out from Sydney and five days overdue. She left the Australian port at 4 p.m. on Afonday week for Wellington with a cargo of case oil aboard, and has not since been heard of. The Kaiapoi from Newcastle, Westralia from Melbourne, and Moeraki from Sydney, which all left last week, have arrived at their New Zealand destinations, but none report having seen or heard from the Canastota. The Jlanuka. and Marama both left here lost week for Sydtney, and have arrived at their destination, but apparently did not sight the Canastota on the way over. The Canastota is fitted with wireless, hut no messages from the vessel have been received by the agents, Afessrs. Dalgety and Company. Yesterday morning they sent out a general wireless message to all vessels within range asking them to endeavour to get into touch with the Canastota and to report to Wellington. So far no reply has been received. It is feared that the Canastota has met with an accident, and conjectures are rife on the waterfront as to what has happened to the vessel. The weather in the Tasman of late has been calm and fine. The Canastota is a British-built ship, but a unit of the American U.S. and A. Line, and was manned by Americans. She is ft steel screw steamer, with one deck, of 4904 tons gross and 3139 tons net. She was built in 1907 by Afessrs. Napier and Afiller, Ltd., of Glasgow, and was originally known as the Falls of Orchy. She was classed 100 Al at Lloyd’s. Her principal dimensions are; Length, 405 feet; breadth, 52.3 feet; and depth, 18.5 feet. . Captain Lockio is in command of the'vessel. The Canastota was coming to Wellington to unload 60,000 cases of benzine, and general cargo from Boston and New York.
