THEFTS BY CIVIL SERVANTS

JUDGE ORDERS lAIPRISONAIENT IN WANGANUI CASE. By TeleEraph..—Press Association. Wanganui, June 22. Harold John Salmond, a Civil servant, who pleaded guilt to the theft of X 333 13s. lid. from the Native Land Court, was sentenced to fifteen months’ hard labour- by Afr. Justice Hosking, who stated that, unfortunately, in the public service these cases had been rather frequent. Possibly the offenders had been dealt with too leniently. The object of punishment -was to deter others from doing likewise. He would be lacking in his duty if he did not impose a term of imprisonment.
