AN HOTEL LICENSE
APPLICATION REFUSED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Tauranga, June 10. Application was made to tho annual mooting of the Licensing Committee today by -E. Prentis for an accommodation license for an hotel at Maketu. TTiTs was a license allowed to tfipse last year by non-payment of the license fee. to enable application to bo made for a license at •Matamata. The application was refused and the case led to legislation being passed last session to prevent attempt from being made in this way to transfer a license. The application'for regranting of the license at Maketu was opposed by the blew Zealand Alliance and by the police on account of the allegedly unsatisfactory slate of the building and the demoralis- , ing effect on Natives; also on account of the fact that the total adult population of the settlement was under one hundred. Mr. Hampson, of Rotorua, who appeared for the applicant, urged that a license should be issued' on the grounds that Maketu was popular as a seaside resort, and that the owners had undertaken’to effect substantial repairs. The committee after a retirement of one hour decided that it was impossible to grant a license tor such premises.
