At the meeting of tho Manawatu County Council Sir James Wilson was re-elected chairman.

Returning thanks for his re-election as chairman, of tho Oroua County Council, Mr. O. M'Elroy, in referring to the financial position, said he hoped with theassistance of members to bo able to place tho council on a better financial footing than that mjjy existing. The overdraft was -£1932, to which accounts owing must be added and made the present indebtedness -£594-2. Ho considered that it was time to take a pull, and ho asked h's fellow members to do with as little expenditure as possible in their respective ridings for some time to come. Although the overdraft appeared high it was reducible by -£2500 Giving for Government subsidy. With the new machinery coming to hand they hoped to bo in a position to give the ratepayers better roads and more value for their money than they had been able to do in the past.

There was a large, gathering sit Fitzherbert East on Wednesday afternoon on the occasion of the unveiling of a memorial in memory of nine young men from the district who had paid the supremo sacrifice at tho war. Tho memorial took the form of a tablet erected in the local school grounds and the unveiling ceremony was performed by Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P. Ono speaker took exception to the Education Board having refused to subsidise the subscriptions on the jjound that tho memorial was not erected inside tho school buildings.
