The batsmen notched 25 runs in seventeen minutes, Mayne’s contribution being 18. Mills replaced Dipper at 35, Bardsley welcoming him by hitting 14 off one over. Mayne and Bardsley vied with each other in a neck-and-neck race, the former hooking 'balls off the middle peg round to leg in an audacious manner. He scored 50 in an hour, the century immediately following. Bardsley 'reached his 50 ten minutes later. * Dennett and Hammond took a turn with the attack, and' the former, in his second over, clean bowled Mayne. Mayne made 79, which included twelve fours. It was his only confident innings in the tour. The wicket suited the batsmen, and Bardsley and Macartney kept the pace a cracker, despite bowling changes and a new ball. It was brilliant, attractive lotting, particularly the leg work. Bardsley hit seventeen fours. Andrews came in, nnd the scoring continued free. Parker went on in place of Dennett at 314.
