PRINCIPLE NOT FAVOURED

MELROSE PROPOSAL TO CITY COUNCIL. |f.

A suggestion of tho Melrose and South Kilbirnie Tramway Extension League and Melrose Ratepayers’ and Electors’ Association that tho City Council should proceed with the road formation necessary for the proposed Melrose tram extension, the money to be provided by tho restdents of the district as the work proceeded. was not approved by the council at its meeting last night. The Finance Committee could not recommend endorsement of the principle contained in the suggestion. n . The Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) explained 'that the committee was not unsympathetic, but it was averse from creating what might prove to be a dangerous precedent. Melrose had offered <£2ooo, and the estimated cost of the work was 2012,000. The committee was afraid of being embarrassed by requests from other districts if it acceded to the present request. Councillor C. H. Chapman regretted that the Finance Committee felt it must reject the Alelrose proposal. Councillor M. F. Duckie suggested that tho request arose largely from the consideration that the work would enhance the value of properties m the Mclresn district. He thought that the council should be careful not to commit itself to a large expenditure on non-essential work merely because a certain sum was offered in the way of a contribution.
