APPLICATION FOR WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS

Mr. Justice Adams heard in Chambers this morning an unusual application—one for a writ of habeas corpus for the release of Eric Hansspn, who was sentenced at Middlomarch by the Magistrate (Air. Lovy) to two terms of imprisonment for procuring liquor while prohibited. The Licensing Act fixed the maximum fine at J3lO, in default three months’ imprisonment, but the Magistrate had given accused no option. Counsel urged that the Alagistrate had no jurisdiction to issue the warrant under which tho man is he’d. Mr. Justice Adams made a rule nisi falling upon the gaoler to show cause why accused should not be discharged, tho rule to be returned by
