On Tuesday last the Right Hon. W. F. Massey, P.C., was the guest of the London Board of the Bank of New Zealand at a luncheon party. Co.; Sir Robert Stout; Sir John Findlay; and Mr. F. D. Thomson, C.M.G. References to the knighthood conferred upon Sir John Luke' were made at tho City Council meeting last night. the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.?.) said he thought the qouncil would agree that Sir John and Lady Luke both richly deserved the honour that had been com cried, upon them. Councillor M. F. Luckie endorsed what the Mayor had said and. the council decided that a letter of congratulation should be sent to the exMayor and Lady Luke. Mr. J. Eames, formerly of the staff'of the New Brighton Borough Council, has assumed his new' duties as town clerk of the borough of Lower Hutt. Sergeant-Major-Saddler D. A. Tayior,. R.N.Z.A., has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. The Ixmg-Ser-vico and Good-Conduct Medal has been awarded io Sergeant-Mnjor-Artificer . F. Warren, Sergeant E- C. Boult, and Sergeant E. P. Chapman, all R.N.Z.A. For tho purpose of bidding farewelllto tho ox-town clerk of Lower Hutt (Mr. W. Nicholson), who will sever his connection with the borough at the end of the week, the staff met in tho council chambers yesterday morning and presented him with a travelling rug. Mr. E. P. Rishwortli, who hud been invited, by the staff to attend and make tho presentation, said that his offico a ®, of the borough had been considerably lightened by tho assistance Mr Nicholson, upon whom he had found he could at all times rely. Mr. Mcholson had always evinced a keen in tho affairs of the borough, and in the public weal. "I can only say, added the Mayor, ‘‘that I regret very much his severance from tho position o to«n clerk."
