SITTINGS AT NAPIER.

Tn the Supreme Court, William James M'Kain, a Postal cadet, for opening Postal packets, was sentenced to two years’ probation. The trial has commenced of George Dunn, charged with manslaughter, in causing the death of Marion Douglas Baird, of Hastings, on April 22. The death of the woman followed an alleged assault. Tho prosecution stated that on the night in question residents heard groans, screams, cries for help, and noises caused by scuffling, but thought the persons were under the influence of drink. Later accused was seen to leave the spot. He had been seen in the company of deceased earlier in the evening. No fewer than twenty-three witnesses have been summoned. r lho case is proceeding.
