HARRIERS

WEEK-END OUTINGS

SCOTTISH CLUB The Scottish Harriers held their run at Miramar on Saturday, some twenty runners taking part. Owing to the strong wind blowing paper was dispensed with, the trail following the five miles championship course. In preparation tor next Saturday’s race, the runners were divided into two packs, the "slow” pack, in charge of Captain S. Hall, being conceded five minutes’ start by the "fast pack, which had A. Clapham as pacemaker. The latter pack made up its ground shortly before reaching the Jong straight leading to the tram terminus, and the full pack was lined up for a handicap run-in, some 600 yards from home. Tn a gruelling race against a strong head wind Campbell Dawkins held the lead for some 400 yards, but failed to stay the distance, the order at the finish being: A. W. Page, 10yds., 1; IT. Knowles-Smith, 10yds., 2; G. B. Anderson, scr.. 3, with G. Brown and L. Dawkins lying handy. As showing the revived interest in cross-country running this season it is worthy of note that of the twenty runners participating in this run eighteen are eligible for the club’s 21 miles novice race, which is to take place at Lyall Bay next Saturday. Some twenty-five runners have entered for .this race, and the introduction for so much new blood into the harrier ranks should make it an interesting contest. The club has recently had presented to it a silver cup, which it has decided to allot for annua! competition as a memorial to the Inte "Bob” Ballantyne, the club's first champion. WELLINGTON CLUB. The Wellington Harriers held their weekly run from the Seatoun terminus, there being a good muster of runners, the paper being dispensed with. The pack, in charge of C. Rowberry (vicecaptain), went around Seatoun and Worsen Bay, then going over Worsen Bay hills and getting on to the Miramar straight which is well known to harriers. A race then took place, trying some of the new members out over the course where the novice race is to he run next Saturday. A handicap run-in over the last half-mile resulted: A. Hill, 100yds., 1; R. Esan, 75yds., 2; R, Mowbray, 40vds., 3. The novice peace is to be held next Saturday from Miramar terminus. There are good entries and the event is exnected to provide interesting racing. The officials are: .lodges, Messrs. W. H. B°nnett, A. S. Hilliker, and C. D. Morpeth; timekeeper, Mr. W. H. Pollock; number steward, Mr. T. Farrington. BROOKLYN CLUB. On Saturday at the Petono Racecourse the Novice Handicap was contested, 17 competitors facing the starter, Mr. A C. Mitchell. The course, which was laid by Messrs. Burk and Mitchell, started from the grandstand, and proceeding round the racecourse for about 600 yards, left the track and cut away to the north, making a detour back to the racecourse, • which enabled the spectators to witness the last 400 yards of the race. Coming into the borne stretch A. Barclav was leading with W. M’Gowan fast pulling up, but 200 yards from the finish the former sprinted away and the race resolved itself into a determined finish for second place between M’Gowan and W. P. Shorland. the latter, who made a very game effort, failing by a yard. The pace was remarkably fast for a novice race, and the form exhibited by some of the. competitors augurs woll for the future of the club. Prior to the race the members not eligible to compete ran over the course, arriving back in time to see the race start. OLYMPIC CLUB. The weekly run of the Olympic Harriers was held (in conjunction with the the Stop Out Club) from Island Bay, where a most enjoyable afternoon was 'spent. The Olympic Club turned out 43 strong. The course, an ideal one, laid by R. F. Osborne and A. E. Scents, led towards the Red Rocks as far as the “run round.” then up the gully for about, a mile, thence across the hills to Island Bay, a distance of about 61 mi’e-s. The run-in resulted in E. A. Shaw, T. Crosby, and H. Kerr finishing in that order. The thanks of the clubs are tendered to the proprietors of Clift’ House. Tea Rooms, where a most enjoyable afternoon tea was provided. Next Saturday. the Novi?“ Race will be decided at Lower Hutt Park, where a keen contest will ho fought out between the younger members.
