SATURDAY’S MATCHES.

Tho third round of matches was completed on Saturday in fine but cold weather. The recent rain had taken some of the sting out of the grounds, and was greatly appreciated by the players. At Petone, the two unbeaten teams in the competition, Central and Petone, met, and a very fast and interesting game resulted. Although Petone won easily, the scores do not represent the difference in the play. At Newtown Park City were successful against Suburbs. Newtown defaulted to Athletic. PETONE (42) V. CENTRAL (8). These hitherto unbeaten teams met on tho Petone Oval before a fair attendance of spectators. Although the scores were greatly in favour of Petone, the game was bright and interesting throughout, a first-class exhibition of the Rugby League code being given. The Central forwards played a very fine game throughout, and were very successful in obtaining the ball, but the Petone backs proved too clever. The combination of tho Petone team for so early in the season is remarkable, and shows that they have paid strict attention to training. Tho handling and passing of the ball was of a high order throughout, and it was duo to these movements that Petone were enabled to register anch a largo total. For the winners IT. Nunn and "Doc.” Nicholls at five-eighths gave j, very clever exhibition, both ou attack and defence, on numerous occasions turning dangerous rushes by Central into promising attacking positions, taking the ball from one end of the ground to rhe other. Kruse, F. Nunn, and Shanahan also played well. The forwards, though beaten for the ball in the serum, were good in tho loose, Proebstol and Timmerman always being in the forefront, lor Central, Bezar at half and Baxter, fiveeighths, showed good form. The forwaroo all did very well, Harvey being the pick. For the winners. H. Nunn (3), ' Doc. Nicholls (2). F. Nunn (2). Brace (2) and Shanahan (2) scored tries. “Doc. Nicholls converted five tries. For the loseis Curtiss and Baxter scored fries, Hedges converting one. Mr. C. Murphy nas referee. CITY (31) SUBURBS (0). Playing at Newtown Park, City defeated Suburbs by 31 points to nil. I' m the winners, Rigby (2). Coulter (- . Dealy (2). and Salisbury (I) ecored triea. Arm if, Ivigßy, Salisbury and Smith converted one eaeh, while Rigby kicked a penally goal. Mr. B. Childs was referee. Juniors. At Newtown Park a fart and exciting contest resulted in the match between Petone West and Suburbs, ihe former being successful by one point, tho final scores being: Petone West, 12; Suburbs, Petone'North defeated Athletic at Emerson Street by 36 to nil. Third Class. Petone (3) defeated City (0).
