MAORI WAR VETERANS
ANNUAL REUNION. The New Zealand (Maori) War Veterans’ Association held its annual reunion ►at tho Hotel Selwyn on Saturday night. Mr. R. Tingey, of Wellington, (for tlio past twenty years vice-president - of ths association) presided, and there was an attendance of between fifty and sixty veterans, a number of whom, despite their advanced age, came from Wanganui, Ha- , wera, Palmerston North, and Mastertan, districts in order to be present. Ihb chairman, in welcoming the visitors, read a number of apologies received from various parts of the Dominion, and went on to refer to the interest that attached to the gathering on account of the fash diminishing ranks of -the veterans of thfi Maori war. The proceedings were of an informal character, and with song and story and short speeches appropriate .to the occasion, a most enjoyable evening was spent by all present. The following toast-list was honoured I —"The King," proposed by the chairman; "Parliament,” Mr. T. Bland, response being made by. Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P.; "'South African War Veterans," Captain Humphries, rsponse by General Sir Alfred Robin; "Returned Soldiers’ Association," Captain Clarke, response by Mr. G. Aldridge and Major Hardhum, V.C.; "Navy, Army and Territorials,*’ Rev. C. F. Askew, response by Captain Henry; "The Visitors,” Lieutenant-Col-onel D. 0. Bates, response by Mr. Hickman.
During the evening entertaining items were contributed by the following:—Messrs. R. Moore, L. Inch, A, Russell, H. Phipps, W. Goudie. Mr. Harold Godier was at the piano.
