Mrs. and Miss Estelle Beere and Miee Joan Beere returned yesterday from « visit to Sydney and Melbourne. Mrs. Tocker, who has been the guest of her mother, Mrs. Sievwright, The Terrace, has loft, with her little eon, for her home in Christchurch. At a meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, the following resolution was passed:—"The Society for the Protection of Women and Children (Wellington Branch) respectfully urges the Rignt Hon. W. F. Massey to support at the Imperial Conference about to ’be held, any measure that will ensure to British-born women the right of choice on marriage with an alien, either to retain her own nationality or to assume that of her husband.” Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Keogh, of Auckland, are visiting Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Keogh, who made rhe journey via the Wanganui River, will return fay,way of New Plymouth. Mi-. T. W. Hislop entertained a number of the soldier patients in Trentham Hospital last week, and intends to do so again at the coming week-end. Mr. George Highland, the American, producer, who arrived from Sydney by the Marama, states that when he left Melbourne, Miss Ethel Morrison, of the Gilbert-Sullivan Opera Company, was confined to a hospital with-diphtheria. Miss Ethel Morrison was formerly better known in Wellington as Miss Ettie Maginnity, a notably good performer here with the amateurs. Mrs. Bishop (Selwyn Terrace) has returned from a visit to Pahiatua. \ —— Mrs. R. T. Tosswill (Christchurch), who is a vice-president of the Canterbury Women’s Club, is visiting tonMr. and Mrs. Lionel Nelson are leaving for a visit to England. Mrs. W. Luko hopes to leave Wellington next week for a visit to Hobart. Mr. and Mrs. L. O. H. Tripp intend leaving this month for a visit -to England. Mr. and Mts. G. D. Greenwood passed through Wellington yesterday on their return to Christchurch from Wanganui,, where they had been attending the races. The marriage has been arranged between Vicomte de Sibour snd‘ Miss Violette Selfridge, second daughter of Mr. Gordon Selfridge, the principal of the famous London business house. The marriage will take place in London next April. The Vicomte de Sibour is the second son of Count de Sibour, head of a very old French Roman Catholic family. He served with distinction during the war as an air pilot in the French Army. ’ His exploits won him many de« corations. Dr. and Mre. Veitch, who are removing to Samoa, were given a big send-off at Norsewood. Dr. Veitch a,os presented with. a suit case, Mrs. Veitch with a gold wristlet watch, Caughley with a Hack opal brooch. Mrs. J. Bidwill (Wairarapa) and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Barton are staying at Island Bay. Mrs. P. Campbell (Christchurch), who lately returned from a visit to England, is visiting her sister, Ixidy Bell. Women’s National Council. A meeting of the Women’s National Council (Wellington Branch') was held in the Pioneer Club last evening. Miss N. E. Coad, M.A.. presided, and there was a good attendance of members. A letter was received from, the Minister of Labour with regard to the closing of the Women’s Branches of the labour Bureau, and it was resolved that, a letter should be forwarded to the Minister asking that a woman be appointed to a responsible position -in the men’s branch, of the bureau to deal with women’s work.. Matters in connection with the municipal elections were discussed at length. The demolition of Mason’s Gardens was brought before the meeting, and members expressed the opfhion that it would be very unwise to do away with them. It was resolved to approach the Minister of Forestry asking that the Government take over the gardens as a public reserve. The committee considered that the cutting down of beautiful trees that had taken so long to collect and to grow was an act of vandalism that was unpardonable in a civilised age. In future this area in which the gardens were situated would become thickly populated, and the acquirement of such a reserve v/ould l>e good' municipal business and very economical for the futurs. The following resolution was also passed:— “That the Wellington Branch of the Women’s National Council congratulate the Minister of Internal Affairs upon the reform he hns instituted in that type of picture film which depicts scenes of robbery and violence and hopes that in the interests of young people he will soon see his way to effect further modifications in those fijms which deal too exclusive!v and too morbidly with Hie sex ouestion. Further, in the interests of young people, that a woman censor be appointed l to the staff. Navy League Ladies’ Auxiliary. A meeting of the Indies’ Auxiliary of the Navy 'League was held yesterday afternoon in Vickers’ Buildings, Woodward Street. Mrs. Hosking (president) was in the chair, and there were also present: Mesdames C. Richardson. Larnach Phillips Turner, Lever, Tripp, Buxton, W. Luke, J. Darling (hon.secretarv). W. D. Stewart, von Haast. Bradner 'Williams, Miss Medley, and Miss Edwin. Mrs. Tripp was granted leave of absence in order to visit England, and Mrs W Luke three months leave in which to visit Hotart. The resignation of Mrs C Earle was received with deep regret,'and very warm appreciation of her work for the Navv League was exnressed. It was hoped that she im\it biter on see her way to continue her work for the league. An tor was read by Mrs. von Haast from Captain Pannett, in which he annl T commended film work of the Navy League in connection with the hosmtality shown to the cadets.
