In order to bring revenge .and disgrace on his father, a. man who had deserted from the 3rd Rifle Brigade at Portsmouth confessed that he 'had turned thief. Writing his confession, the soldier said he stole a post office savings book, representing a sum of .£72, and o’her articles from the house of a man named Fast, and admitted forging withdrawal notices and obtaining money from the nost offices at Windsor and plough. "The reason I have done this,” he wrote, "is not for want of money, bnt because my father has treated me so badly for the past ten years.”
