meeting of THE council. The monthly meeting of the Victoria College Council was held last evemng. Mr- P. Levi presided. The statement of accounts showed that the funds at call totalled .£8641 14s- 6d., made up of £-3a4 18s. 6d. in the Bank of New- Zealand, and £6286 16s. in the Post Office Savings Unnlc. The chairman reported that lin der the S A Rhodes Trust the council had already received £lO,OOO in cash, and had yet 'to receive debentures and a small amount of cash. By the trust it was provided that the council must establish scholarships for the purpose of domestic science research or domestic science in some form or another. It the council desired at any time to change the form, say, to establish a their permission -would have to be obtained from the trustees. It was particularly desired that there should not be any competition with the school, established in Otago. He thought it would be the duty of the council to appoint a commitee to formulate a scheme in accordance with the trust. The chairman and the registrar wers appointed representatives to sign, the amended contract for the erection of the physics wing with the Fletcher Construction Company, the contract price being £23,252- . t The registrar was instructed to write to the Government Insurance Department, agreeing to pay the increased rates for insuring the staff against accident, to meet the council’s increased liability under the Workers’ Compensation Amendment Act, 1920. It was resolved to make a grant or £lOO towards furnishing the womens new common room. . Professor Hunter moved that the registrar write to the Auckland University Council, asking it to join with the Victoria University College Council m an j appeal to the Government to make.provision for special schools in the two colleges, and to provide extra grants for these colleges for the work of such departments aa arts, science, and law, because these colleges srnwe the greater part of the population, of Isew Zealand. Professor Hunter said it was necessary that the northern colleges should have these special schools, and he thought it desirable that they should co-operate with Auckland The two northern colleges were called upon to serve the greater portion of the population, and it was time these special schools were established. Mr. C. Watson said it was -desirable that the council should move in the matter. In Otago they had the special school of medicine, and in Canterbury there was the special school of engineering. The motion was carried.
