THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

By

Glencox.

Owners of horses ready to race will have much to engage their atiention tomorrow, when entries close for the Taranaki, Egmont, Gisborne, and Dunedin meetings, all of which are to be held in February. Acceptances for the first day's handicaps at the AVellington meeting close tomorrow uighi. at 9 o’clock. Acceptances for the AVellington Trotting Club’s meeting close at 8 p.m. tomorrow, with Air. R. AV. Short, Box 4, Petone. Recently the two-year-old Capping Day met with a slight; accident while running out, and it has been found necessary to spell her for a few days. She is an unlikely starter at the Trentham meeting. The services of A. Reed have been secured for Lovematch in the AVellington Cup. In recent years the Reed Bros, have taken a prominent part in the decision of the Wellington Cup. Ashley Reed has won it twice on Bee and Bunting, and Roy Reed has been on the dead-heaters Rewi I’oto and Kilmoon.

The Messrs. Riddiford will be represented by Falstaff and the two-year-olds Scion and Quest' at the AVellington meeting. The first-mentioned will be ridden in the Junipers’ Flat Handicap by vV. Y’oung, and A. Reed will ride the two-year-olds, both of whoni were place-get-ters during the holidays. The Buckwheat colt Wheatfield is still growing fast, and his owners have decided not to ask him to race until the autumn. This is probably a wise decision, as the stock of the imported horse generally take time to mature. Royal Exchange is to start in the Apprentices’ Plate at: Trentham, and will be ridden by J. Hockley. Shamrock was sore after racing at Awapuni, and it has been decided to spell the Kilbroney gelding. His stable companion, Wake, showed no form during the holidays, and at present she is not doing much work on the tracks. During the holiday meetings complaints were rife as to the foul riding in many races. Several inquiries were held, but in the majority of cases nothing more than a warning was received by the offenders. This'is a very serious matter, and as big fields will be the order of tho day at Trentham, foul riding should not) be tolerated on any account, as it may lead to very grave consequences. It would perhaps be a good idea if the whole of the riders were marshalled before tho opening event, and a warning issued that an example would be made of any offenders against the rule. Prince Alnri'ian is to race in the Apprentices’ Plate at Trentham, and the three-year-old will be ridden by R. S. Bagby. W. Kirk is due to arrive at Trentham on Tuesday with the Cup candidate Punka. An effort was made to secure H. Gray’s services for the Cooltrim mare, bn;, he has been engaged for Oratress. Trainers with horses engaged at the AVellington Cup Aleeting will be glad to learn that arrangements have been made to water the tracks each night. This is a boon that will be appreciated. A Press Association message from Melbourne states that Biplane has been entered for the Newmarket Handicap, and Finmark for the Australian Cup. - TROTTING TE AWAAIUTU MEETING. NEW ZEALAND TROTTING ASSOCIATION Bv Teleeranh—Press Association. Christchurch, January 12. . At a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association, Miss V. James appeared in connection with the Nature’s Gentleman case. The inquiry was conducted in committee, and further consideration was deferred for one month. The president reported that Sir George Clifford would bring the matter of trotlino- stakes at racing clubs’ meetings before next meeting of the Racing Conference; The president drew attention to a case which had occurred at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, when the totalisator inspector had refused to allow investments to be returned in the case of a horse that took no part in a race owing to its sulky being damaged before the start. The president, said that although there was a clause in the Gaming Act which might be read insupport of the inspector’s contention, the Rules o . Trotting gave stewards power to ref "nd investments in such a case, and that power had been exercised in numbers ot instances. It was the first time that an official really outside the spoiu had interfered in such, and he though r - presentations should be made to the Minister of Internal Affairs on the subject 'it was agreed that the matter should be left to the president to make representations to the Minister. The applications of the Otautau and Waimatc Trotting Clubs for registration wore held over till next meeting. The Forbury Park Trotting Club wrote in reply to the association’s letter, stating that it was proposed to hold an inquiry into the starting at the clubs recent meeting, and asking the club to send a representative, that as the Judicial Committee had held an inquiry into the starting of the Empire Handicap and had accepted the starter’s explanation, the club .did not consider it necessary to be represented at the inquiry. Mr. Samson, being a member of the Forbury Park Club, could take no part in dealing with this matter, and the board was left without a quorum to act. The matter in consequence had to stand orer until next meeting, as had the club’s reply to an inquiry as to whether in the Dimlight case the stewards had considered the interference to be intentional.
